Started by young people who wanted a better Jatni
We are a volunteer group of students and young workers from Jatni, Odisha, working on health, cleanliness and safety in our own neighbourhoods.
Our Story
How JYS began
Jatni Yuva Shakti Club was formed under the Young GameChangers Initiative (YGI), a programme supported by UN-Habitat, the World Health Organization and Aarogyam Knowledge to Action Society (AKAS). The idea was simple: young people know their town best, so they should be part of fixing its problems.
A small group of us began by visiting schools and talking to children about handwashing and road safety. Soon ward members, ASHA workers and teachers started asking us to come to their areas too. Today JYS brings together committed young volunteers from across Jatni.
We still work the same way. We go to the people, listen first, and then act together with the municipality, the health department, the police and the community.
Youth for Change, Community for Progress
Our Vision
To build a Healthy, Safe, and Sustainable Jatni where empowered youth lead transformative community change.
Our Mission
To empower young people to lead public health, cleanliness, safety, and community development initiatives through awareness, capacity-building, and collective action.
How we work
Three steps in every programme
Step 1
Spread awareness
Street plays, school sessions, posters and door-to-door visits, in Odia and in simple words.
Step 2
Train young people
Workshops that give volunteers the skills and confidence to lead work in their own wards.
Step 3
Act together
Cleanliness drives, health camps and road safety drives run with the municipality, CHC and police.
